Compare add/sub statements with fractions I

Lesson

You may have learned how to add and subtract fractions.

When comparing values of mathematical statements we use special symbols:

  • $<$< means "is less than"
  • $>$> means "is greater than"
  • $=$= means "is equal to"

Now watch this video to learn about comparing fraction statements.

Examples

Question 1

Enter the symbol, $<$<, $>$> or $=$=, that makes the statement true.

  1. $\frac{5}{19}+\frac{6}{19}\editable{}\frac{7}{19}$519+619719

Question 2

Enter the symbol, $<$<, $>$> or $=$=, that makes the statement true.

  1. $8\frac{6}{10}\editable{}3\frac{2}{10}+5\frac{1}{10}$86103210+5110

Question 3

Enter the symbol, $<$<, $>$> or $=$=, that makes the statement true.

  1. $1\frac{2}{6}+3\frac{3}{6}\editable{}4\frac{4}{6}$126+336446

Sometimes the fractions are over one, or there are more than two fractions in the statements. Watch this video to learn about harder statements.

Remember!

Evaluate (work out) the statement and then compare the value.

To help solve the statement, draw a representation (a number line or rectangle).

Examples

Question 3

Enter the symbol, $<$<, $>$> or $=$=, that makes the statement true.

  1. $1\frac{2}{6}+3\frac{3}{6}\editable{}4\frac{4}{6}$126+336446

Question 4

Enter the symbol, $<$<, $>$> or $=$=, that makes the statement true.

  1. $\frac{5}{8}\editable{}\frac{2}{8}+\frac{1}{8}+\frac{4}{8}$5828+18+48
