Find multiples of fractions

Lesson

Seeing fractions

We've seen how we can use number lines and area models to show multiples of unit fractions, so now we're ready to see how we can display multiples of other fractions. It's really no different, except we count by more than one space or piece.

Let's see how we can do this, in the video.

Worked Examples

Question 1

We are going to work out how to represent $5\times\frac{3}{6}$5×36 on the number line.

  1. Mark $\frac{3}{6}$36 on the number line.

    01

  2. Now mark $5\times\frac{3}{6}$5×36 on the number line below.

    0123

Question 2

How many groups of five twelfths are there in the number plotted on the number line below?

012

Question 3

Which of the following models has the value of $4\times\frac{3}{8}$4×38 coloured in? Select all options that apply.

  1. A

    B

    C

    D

Remember!

It's similar to using number lines to show multiplication, or repeated addition, with whole numbers. With fractions, the value of each space is less.
