EXPLORE: Collect and display data

Lesson

 Let’s Explore!

In this activity you will be able to learn the different ways of collecting and recording data. You will also have a chance to represent data in many ways.

Plan what to ask

With your teacher and your classmates, join the discussion to decide what data to collect. Make sure that the data is observable like colors of lunchboxes, or the types of fruit eaten and that  you can count the responses, like how many of each color of lunchbox or how many people like the different fruits.

Brainstorm as a class different ways this data could be collected. Discuss as a class to decide the most appropriate way to collect and display the data

Collect data

Talk with your group and teacher to arrange a time and place for you to collect the data. Present the data in a table.

Display the data

Create a picture graph or a bar graph based on the data you presented in a table. If you choose to make a picture graph, you may use stickers or stamps. Don’t forget to include a key for your picture graph.

Let's try for more!

Gallery walk

As a group, find a place in the room to post your graph and prepare for a gallery walk. With your group, make your way around the room to analyze the graphs of the other groups.

  • What can you see that the graphs have in common?
  • Is the data similar for all the graphs? Why do you think so?
  • What can you see that is different between the graphs?
