EXPLORE: Volume

Lesson

 Let’s Explore!

This activity lets you explore volume. It will be quite messy!! So you will need to work in an area that can get wet, like a kitchen or science lab, or you can do it at home with your parents.

You will need:

  • 50mL of water and a way to measure this
  • 1 drop of food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • 20 mL of liquid detergent
  • 30 mL of vinegar
  • a small to medium size jar (like an old peanut butter jar)

Make a fizzy potion

Step 1: Before you begin

Estimate the volume of your jar and write this down. Then properly measure it using water and a measuring jug (or if it's an old jar with a label still on it, it might be written on there).

Step 2: Make the fizzy potion

Start with 50 mL of water in the jar. Now add the following in this order: food coloring, liquid detergent, baking soda, then vinegar. If there is not an immediate reaction, give a gentle stir.

Step 3: Observations

What happened? What did you see? What did you smell? What did you hear?

Reflect

What does this tell us about the volume of your jar?

The total volume of liquid we added was 100 mL. Was the jar big enough?
