PRACTICE: Multiplication and division

Lesson

Practice

Before you practice the work from this chapter, take some time to go over some of the multiplication and division strategies and problems we've looked at. These include:

  • using arrays to solve multiplication and division problems
  • partitioning, or splitting numbers to solve multiplication problems
  • using an area model to solve division problems
  • using a standard algorithm to solve multiplication and division problems

With these strategies, we were able to move on to multiplication of two digit numbers by two digit numbers. We were also able to solve division problems with remainder, as well as dividing by two digit numbers.

Apply

Question 1

Let's use the area model to find $97\times3$97×3.

  1. Fill in the areas of each rectangle.

              $90$90           $7$7
    $2$2         $\editable{}$           $\editable{}$

    $1$1         $\editable{}$           $\editable{}$
  2. What is the total area of all four rectangles?

  3. So what is $97\times3$97×3?

Question 2

Find $4316\times4$4316×4.

Question 3

Find the value of $884\div4$884÷4.

Remember!

We have different ways we can solve multiplication and division problems, and as our numbers get larger, the algorithm method can be more useful. Being able to regroup (trade), as well as find remainders with division is important.

Outcomes

4.OA.6

Demonstrate complete fluency with products of one-digit numbers.

4.NBT.5

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

4.NBT.6

Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
