Why is teaching maths important to you?

The regular check-ins with Math Space provided ‘real-time’ data for the students and for me as their Math teacher. These formative assessments, coupled with classwork and student participation, formed the basis for my weekly meetings with individual students. Teaching the students how to navigate the platform to access ‘their’ data empowered them. The students confidently articulated their focus areas as we tailored learning goals, success criteria and routines to suit their individual needs.

Why is teaching maths important to you?

Mathematics can be fun and self propelling when you get it, rising and meeting the challenge and experiencing success however it is important to know when you are getting it wrong. It is so important to know when you are making a mistake so that you don't practice it (learnt mistakes take more effort to undo). Knowing when you make a mistake can help you decide it is time to STOP until you get the assistance you need. Try and leave enough working out and I might be able to guide you to where the error has occurred. Mathematics also is a language, just as English has grammar rules such as full stops to end the sentence and leave a space and start the new sentence with a Capital letter, so too Mathematics has a structure or rules that need to be followed.

Teaching mathematics builds students' confidence in problem-solving and reasoning, and connects numeracy to everyday life.  I love witnessing students flourish when the concept they once found challenging becomes an easier one to comprehend.

Being a maths teacher is an exciting career because the more you understand the subject the more you see that it is a critical life skill. Through teaching the students to take logical steps and problem-solve, I can help my students find new ways to develop their creative and analytical abilities as well as think critically about the world around us. One of the most exciting parts of teaching Maths is that I encourage students to not be afraid of making mistakes, I work with them to support them to learn from their mistakes by identifying the logical errors in their problem-solving. Recent neurological research shows that making mistakes and learning from them grows the brain.
