Introduction to Area

Lesson

Measuring Space

Area, is defined as the space within a 2D shape.

All these shapes have the same area as they all contain 5 square units each.

As well as whole unit squares, sometimes shapes might be composed of parts of unit squares.  Take this shape for example.

So this shape would have a total of $3$3 whole square units, $1$1 half a square unit and $2$2 quarter square units resulting in a total area of

$3+\frac{1}{2}+\frac{2}{4}=4$3+12+24=4 square units
