Multiply various single, 2 and 3 digit numbers

Lesson

More digits

We've looked at many tools and tips you can use to solve multiplication problems, and you can use those ideas to solve problems such as $7\times76$7×76, but what happens if we have larger numbers, or numbers with $3$3 or $4$4 digits?

Getting started

Sometimes it depends on the problem you need to solve, as to how you go forward. Watch how we tackle some multiplication problems, and decide which method we'll use.

Worked Example

Question 1

Find $42\times3$42×3.

Trickier numbers and tricks!

Each of the methods we've seen can be used with any numbers, it's just that some make more sense for certain problems. In Video 2, we'll look at multiplying by the thousands, but we find a neat shortcut! Then we'll look at how the area method of multiplication and long multiplication are actually doing the same thing!

Worked Examples

Question 2

Evaluate $739\times63$739×63

    x       $6$6 $3$3
        $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$
    + $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $0$0
      $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$ $\editable{}$

Question 3

Remember!

Don't forget to use your calculator sometimes. Not only is it useful to check your work, you become better at using it with more practice.
