PRACTICE: Multiplication

Lesson

Practice multiplication

We have been learning some ways to build our multiplication skills. These include:

  • using  repeated addition
  •  making arrays  to show equal sized groups
  •  noticing patterns  , such as doubling and skip-counting

We also worked on some time tables, including:

  •  multiplying by 0 or 1
  •  multiplying by 2
  •  multiplying by 4
  •  multiplying by 3
  •  multiplying by 10
  •  multiplying by 5

Examples

Example 1

Find the product of 2\times 8.

Worked Solution
Create a strategy

This can be thought of as 2 groups of 8 stars, as represented in the picture below.

The image shows 2 circles with 8 stars each inside.
Apply the idea

In the above image there are 16 stars in total.2 \times 8 = 16

Example 2

Find the value of 6\times3.

Worked Solution
Create a strategy

We can think of 6\times 3 as 6 groups of 3 just like in the image below that has 6 groups of 3 squares:

The image shows 6 rows of 3 squares.
Apply the idea

The above image has 18 squares in total.

6 \times 3 = 18

Example 3

Find the value of 5\times9.

Worked Solution
Create a strategy

We can think of 5\times 9 as 5 groups of 9 just like in the image below that has 5 groups of 9 squares:

The image shows 5 rows of 9 squares.
Apply the idea

The above image has 45 squares in total.

5 \times 9 = 45

Idea summary

There are different ways to solve multiplication, including repeated addition and using arrays. We can also multiply our numbers in a different order, so 3 \times 4 has the same answer as 4 \times 3.

Outcomes

AC9M3N04

multiply and divide one- and two-digit numbers, representing problems using number sentences, diagrams and arrays, and using a variety of calculation strategies

AC9M3N06

use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving additive and multiplicative situations including financial contexts; formulate problems using number sentences and choose calculation strategies, using digital tools where appropriate; interpret and communicate solutions in terms of the situation

AC9M3A03

recall and demonstrate proficiency with multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10; extend and apply facts to develop the related division facts
