8.04 Fraction bars 1

Lesson

Are you ready?

Can you divide $8$8 into $2$2 equal groups? Can you share $24$24 equally between $3$3 groups? Practice this concept below.

We need to equally share these apples between $4$4 people. How many does each person get?

Learn

Fractions are closely related to division. For example, sharing equally between two groups is also called halving. One half can be written as $\frac{1}{2}$12. Let's learn more about halves, thirds, fourths and fifths.

Apply

Here is a fraction bar.

  1. This fraction bar has $\editable{}$ equal parts.

  2. Each part is $\frac{\editable{}}{\editable{}}$ of the whole.

Remember!

When writing fractions:

  • The number of equal parts the whole is divided into is the denominator (bottom number).
  • The numerator (top number) is how many parts, so shows the value of the fraction.

Outcomes

3.NF.A.1

Understand a unit fraction, 1/b, as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a non-unit fraction, n/b, as the quantity formed by n parts of size 1/b. For example, 3/4 represents a quantity formed by 3 parts of size 1/4.
