9.10 Identify fractions in areas

Lesson

Are you ready?

Can you recognize the number of equal parts in a shape and what fraction that makes?

Here is a shape divided into parts, use it to answer the following questions.

  1. This shape has $\editable{}$ equal parts.

  2. If one part was shaded, that shaded part would be $\frac{\editable{}}{\editable{}}$ of the whole.

Learn

When we divide shapes into parts, if all those parts have the same area then we have partitioned the shape into equal parts.

If we partition a shape into equal parts, we can describe each part as a unit fraction. We can also use this to describe the area of a part of our shape.

question 1

Which shape has its area partitioned into $6$6 equal parts?

  1. A

    B

    C

    D

Learn

To check if a shape has been partitioned into equal parts or not, we can find the area of each part. If all the parts have the same area, then they area equal parts.

question 2

Is this rectangle partitioned into equal parts?

  1. Yes

    A

    No

    B

Remember!

If we want to represent the shaded parts as a fraction of the total number of parts, each part should have the same area.
