In order to solve problems that involve more than one unit of measurement, we need to be able to convert all the measurements into a single unit. We can use these relationships to help us:

Distance
$1$1 kilometer $=$= $1000$1000 meters
$1$1 meter $=$= $100$100 centimeters
$1$1 yard $=$= $3$3 feet
$1$1 foot $=$= $12$12 inches

Mass
$1$1 kilogram $=$= $1000$1000 grams
$1$1 pound $=$= $16$16 ounces
Volume
$1$1 liter $=$= $1000$1000 milliliters
$1$1 quart $=$= $2$2 pints
$1$1 pint $=$= $2$2 cups
$1$1 cup $=$= $8$8 ounces

Question 2

A tap is dripping at the rate of $2$2 milliliters of water per minute.

  1. How many milliliters of water will be lost in one day?

  2. How many liters of water will be lost in one day?

Remember!

When we have a story problem, we need to think about the story, and use the keywords to work out which operators to use. Some words that we may find in a story could be:

addition subtraction multiplication division
more less groups of equally share
add take away product each
give take times equal groups
arrive leave total per
