3.09 Solving expressions using order of operations

Lesson

Are you ready?

Stories can help us to understand the operations that need to happen, in order to solve a problem. Have a look at this story, to remember how to write a number sentence to represent the story.

Robert is training for a marathon. On the days he trains, he runs $25$25km on a circuit through his town, which is $5$5km long. Robert trains $6$6 days a week.

  1. Which number sentence describes the number of laps Robert completes per week?

    $25\div5\times6$25÷5×6

    A

    $25+5\div6$25+5÷6

    B

     $25\times5\div6$25×5÷6

    C

This video explains what the rules are when it comes to the order of operations.

Vocabulary

Another word that is sometimes used for parentheses is brackets

Question 1

Find the value of $\left(6+4\right)\times\left(6+4\right)$(6+4)×(6+4).

Remember!

The order of operations:

  1. Solve anything inside grouping symbols (brackets).
  2. Solve any multiplication or division, including powers, working from left to right.
  3. Solve any addition or subtraction, working from left to right.

Outcomes

5.OA.A.1
