EXPLORE: Draw angles

Lesson

Let’s Explore!

This activity will have you explore angles by drawing angles using a protractor. First, you will use a Geogebra applet to learn how to make and measure angles. Then, using your own protractor, you will draw your own angles.

Make and measure angles using Geogebra

Visit the following page https://www.geogebra.org/m/qzvjeagn. This applet looks at how to make and measure angles.

Explore the applet. Click the box to choose whether you will practice making angles or measuring angles. Take note of the following while using the applet:

  • One arm of the angle has to be on the ZERO line of the protractor.
  • The other arm is then moved until the correct angle is reached. Make sure you are reading the correct numbers (either outer or inner), depending on where the zero arm is.

Let's try for more!

Draw angles using a protractor

Now practice drawing your own angles using a protractor.

  • Draw three different acute angles and label how big they are.
  • Draw a right angle in three different ways.
  • Draw three different angles that are bigger than 90\degree but smaller than 180\degree and label how big they are.
  • Draw a 180\degree angle in three different ways.
  • Draw three different angles that are bigger than 180\degree but smaller than 360\degree and label how big they are.
  • Draw a 360\degree angle in three different ways.

Reflect

  • In drawing your angles in different ways, does changing the position or direction of the angle change the size of the angle?
  • If you draw two angles side by side, each measuring 75\degree, what will be the sum of the measurement of the two angles?
  • In drawing a 360\degree angle, what shape comes to your mind?

Outcomes

4.G.A.1

Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
