5.12 Tenths and hundredths with fractions

Lesson

Are you ready?

Let's review how we name fractions using the parts and the whole.

Here is a fraction bar.

  1. This fraction bar has $\editable{}$ equal parts.

  2. Each part is $\frac{\editable{}}{\editable{}}$ of the whole.

Question 2

Use the greater than ($>$>) or less than ($<$<) symbols to complete the following:

  1. $\frac{7}{10}\editable{}\frac{66}{100}$71066100

Remember!
  • Tenths and hundredths can both be used to represent the same value.
  • $1$1 tenth is the same as $10$10 hundredths. Remembering this helps us find equivalent fractions.

Outcomes

4.NF.C.5

Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 (tenths) and 100 (hundredths). For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and and 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100. (Note: students who can generate equivalent fractions can develop strategies for adding fractions with unlike denominators in general. But addition and subtraction with unlike denominators, in general, is not a requirement at this grade.)
