When we divide shapes into parts, if all those parts have the same area then we have partitioned the shape into equal parts.

If we partition a shape into equal parts, we can describe each part as a unit fraction. We can also use this to describe the area of a part of our shape.

If we want to represent the shaded parts as a fraction of the total number of parts, each part should have the same area.
