3.01 Counting back

Lesson

Are you ready?

Do you remember how to count forward from any number?

Complete the pattern by adding $10$10 each time.

  1. $30$30, $40$40, $50$50, $\editable{}$, $\editable{}$, $\editable{}$

Vocabulary:
  • Another word that we can use to describe the ones place is 'units'.

Learn

We can also count backwards from any number. Let's see how we can count backwards by $1$1, $2$2, $5$5 or $10$10.

Apply

Find the next number in the pattern:

  1. $33$33, $28$28, $23$23, $18$18, $13$13, $8$8, $\editable{}$

Remember!

When we count backwards, our number gets smaller. We can use a number line to help us, by jumping left. Look at how we can count backwards by $2$2 below.

Outcomes

3.OA.D.9

Identify patterns in the addition table and the multiplication table and explain them using properties of operations (e.G. Observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends).
