2.06 Addition using algorithm

Lesson

Are you ready?

Do you remember how we can break numbers into place value parts?

We have written a number in the number expander below.

  1. What is the value of the ones?

  2. What is the value of the tens?

  3. Now look at the number $45$45. What is the value of the tens?

Vocabulary:
  • Another word that we can use to describe the ones place is 'units'.

  • You might notice that sometimes the standard algorithm is called the 'vertical algorithm'. Let's think about why. When we use the standard algorithm, we line our numbers up in 'vertical' place value columns.

Learn

We are going to use place value to add numbers together, working down our page. This is called using an algorithm.

Apply

Remember!

When we add this way, we always start at the place value that is farthest to the right, which is the ones place. This helps if we have to regroup to the next place.

Outcomes

3.NBT.A.2

Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
