2.01 Dividing multi-digit numbers

Lesson

Divide whole numbers using long division

Long division is the name given to a particular written process to work out the division of one number with another.

  • The number to be divided into is known as the dividend
  • The number which divides the other number is known as the divisor
  • The answer, is called the quotient.

If we have bigger or more complicated division calculations to do, we can use long division to do it on paper.

Worked example

question 1

Use the long division process to find the quotient  $9401\div17$9401÷17

The video below demonstrates the entire process.  When watching, we should pay close attention to what we should be thinking at each step in the process.

Careful!

When using long division, always remember to include a 0 placeholder where it's needed, so your digits stay in the correct place.

Now, let's try a couple of long division problems on our own.
