Partition numbers with decimals in thousandths

Lesson

Partitioning numbers means breaking numbers down in to two or more parts (or splitting them into smaller units).

There are different ways of partitioning a decimal number. For example, 0.513 is equal to

  • 5 tenths, 1 hundredth and 3 thousandths (0.5 + 0.01 + 0.003)
  • 5 tenths and 13 thousandths (0.5 + 0.013)
  • 2 tenths, 31 hundredths and 3 thousandths (0.2 + 0.31 + 0.003)

Let's start with a video.

Remember!

If we think of a block as the ONE... then what fraction of a block is a flat?
   - $\frac{1}{10}$110 because 10 flats = 1 block.  [This can also be written as 0.1]

If we think of a block as the ONE... then what fraction of a block is a long?
   - $\frac{1}{100}$1100 because 100 cubes = 1 block.  [This can also be written as 0.01]

If we think of a block as the ONE... then what fraction of a block is a cube?
   - $\frac{1}{1000}$11000 because 1,000 cubes = 1 block.  [This can also be written as 0.001]

Outcomes
