You may have already learned about representing fractions using area models.
When representing fractions the:
- denominator (the bottom number) shows how many equal parts make the whole.
- numerator (the top number) shows how many equal parts are selected.
Fractions can be written in:
- words, e.g. two thirds
- pictures, e.g.
- symbols, e.g. $\frac{2}{3}$23

The denominator is how many equal parts make up the whole.
The numerator is the number of equal parts in the fraction.
