If you do enough practise, you might be able to add and subtract by picturing a number line in your head! Until then, you can use these tips to help you.
When adding to a number, jump forward (to the right).
When subtracting from a number, jump backwards (to the left).
Examples
Question 1
Use the number line to find the answer to $4+7$4+7.
First place the bigger of $4$4 and $7$7 on the number line.
Use the position of $7$7 to find the place of $4+7$4+7 on the number line.
Question 2
Use the number line to find the answer to $9-4$9−4.
First place $9$9 on the number line.
Place $4$4 on the number line.
Use the number line to work out the difference between $9$9 and $4$4.
Question 3
Use the number line to find the answer to $59-4$59−4.
First place the bigger of $59$59 and $4$4 on the number line.
Use the position of $59$59 to find the place of $59-4$59−4 on the number line.
