Use a map to give and follow directions

Lesson

Direction words

Finding our way around can often involve the use of direction words or sentences. Helping someone find their book might mean we tell them it's next to their pencil case. Some other words we may use, or hear, include:

  • above, below
  • in front, behind
  • left, right
  • past, before

Can you think of any other words to describe position?

Where shall I sit?

We've arrived late for a movie, but luckily someone is there to guide us to our seat. Watch the video to see who we'll be sitting next to.

Where is it?

In the next video, we have some landmarks to navigate around, and a map. We are given directions to find the tool shed, but need to find the screwdriver on our own.

Starting point

When we think about position, it's important to think about where we are now, and the direction we are facing. This is our starting point, and the directions will be in relation to that.
