Construct numbers (10000 to 50000)

Lesson

You may have used units, tens and hundreds blocks in class to build numbers. Now we're going to look at how to build numbers using numerals (written digits). We will use number expanders and place value tables to help us do this. Let's watch a video to get started.

 

Worked examples

Question 1

Answer the following questions.

  1. Write the number that is made up of $3$3 tens and $5$5 ones (units).

  2. Write the number that is made up of $7$7 hundreds, $3$3 tens and $5$5 ones (units).

  3. Write the number that is made up of $4$4 thousands, $7$7 hundreds, $3$3 tens and $5$5 ones (units).

Question 2

For the following questions use each of the digits $2$2, $9$9, $6$6, $4$4 and $3$3 exactly once.

  1. Make the largest number possible that is less than $50000$50000.

  2. Make the second largest number possible that is less than $50000$50000.

Question 3

What is the largest $5$5 digit number less than $50000$50000 that you can make using the digits on a standard die only once?
