Divide decimal by a whole number

Lesson

In Getting a Fair Share, we looked at how to divide by whole numbers. We also looked at how numbers change when they are divided by multiples of 10. The same division rules apply when we divide numbers with decimals. We just need to make sure that we keep the decimal point in the right place (that is, in line with where it was originally).

Let's look at some examples.

Examples

Question 1

Evaluate: $562.59\div9$562.59÷9

Think:

Do: $562.59\div9=62.51$562.59÷9=62.51

Remember you can always add zeros after the decimal point or to the end of your decimal if you can't finish solving the problem because they don't change the value of the number.

Do: $47\div8=5.875$47÷8=5.875

QUESTION 3
