Adding tenths and hundredths (fractions and decimals)

Lesson

Equivalence

Take a look back at equivalence for decimals and fractions. When adding tenths and hundredths it is much easier if they are in the same format.

For example

$0.2+\frac{6}{10}$0.2+610 can be changed to $0.2+0.6$0.2+0.6 or $\frac{2}{10}+\frac{6}{10}$210+610 before solving.

This question will help you to practice changing decimals and fractions.

Question 1

Express $\frac{5}{10}$510 as a decimal.

When adding tenths and hundredths as fractions:

  1. Make the denominators the same
  2. Add the numerators together
  3. Express as a fraction

Question 2

Write $\frac{6}{10}+\frac{3}{100}$610+3100 as a fraction out of $100$100.

Adding with decimals

Watch this video to learn more about adding tenths and hundredths when they are decimals.

When adding tenths and hundredths when they are decimals, first pick a strategy (number line or place value)

  1. Number line:
    • Add the numbers along the line in easy parts
  2. Place value:
    • Line the numbers up in their place value columns
    • Add the numbers starting at the hundredths

Question 3

Evaluate $0.8+0.13$0.8+0.13

Remember!

When adding tenths and hundredths make them the same format using equivalence

When adding fractions, make the denominators the same, then add the numerators

When adding decimals, use place value to add in columns or break the numbers into easy parts to add on a number line
