3.01 Addition and number lines

Lesson

Are you ready?

Being able to find numbers on a number line is going to help us with this lesson. Let's remember how to read a number line.

Examples

Example 1

Where is the point plotted on the number line?

012345
Worked Solution
Create a strategy

Read the label at the point on the number line.

Apply the idea

The label on the number line where the point is located is 4.

So, the point on the number line is 4.

Idea summary

The locations on a number line are labelled with numbers. We can find the location by reading the label at the point.

Addition and number lines

We are going to use a number line to see how to add some numbers together, and see how we can try different ways to do it.

Examples

Example 2

Use the number line to help you find the value of 43 + 12.

404142434445464748495051525354555657585960
Worked Solution
Create a strategy

Start with the bigger number and count to the right by the smaller number.

Apply the idea

Locate where 43 is on the number line. We can find 43 + 12 by jumping from 43 to the right by 12:

404142434445464748495051525354555657585960

So 43 + 12 = 55

Idea summary

When we add on a number line, we move to the right. It is usually easiest to start with the larger number and add the smaller number.

A number line from 0 to 20 with two points at 9 and 15 and an arrow to the right between the points

Outcomes

AC9M3A02

extend and apply knowledge of addition and subtraction facts to 20 to develop efficient mental strategies for computation with larger numbers without a calculator
