12.02 Positive coordinates

Lesson

Are you ready?

Number lines help us work out distance and direction, and can be horizontal or vertical (think of a thermometer). Remembering how to plot points on a number line, will help us in this lesson.

Plot the following numbers on the number lines:

  1. Plot $3$3 on the number line below.

    012345678910

  2. Plot $528$528 on the number line below.

    520525530

  3. Plot $700$700 on the number line below.

    05001000

Vocabulary:

Another phrase that we can use to describe a number plane is a 'coordinate plane'. This is because we locate coordinates on the plane.

Question 2

Here is a coordinate plane.

  1. What object has coordinates $\left(6,2\right)$(6,2)?

    Dog

    A

    Apple

    B

    Star

    C

    Bike

    D
  2. Write the coordinates of the rabbit.

    $\left(\editable{},\editable{}\right)$(,)

Remember!
  • axes - the horizontal and vertical lines, the $x$x-axis and $y$y-axis
  • quadrants - the four different sections our axes create
  • coordinates - these tell us where points are located, with an $x$x-value and a $y$y-value
  • origin - where both $x$x and $y$y are equal to $0$0 and it's where both axes meet

Outcomes

MA.5.GR.4.1

Identify the origin and axes in the coordinate system. Plot and label ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.

MA.5.GR.4.2

Represent mathematical and real-world problems by plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
