Investigation - Building solids

Lesson

Objective

To build solids from various views.

Materials

  • Paper (unlined)
  • Pencil
  • Unit cubes
  • Scissors; and
  • Ruler
  • Glue or sticky tape

Before you begin this activity, define each of the terms listed below.  Be sure that when you are discussing this investigation with your classmates, you use these words correctly in context.

  1. Prism
  2. Cylinder
  3. Front view
  4. Side view
  5. Plan view
  6. Side elevation
  7. Front elevation

(Most of these terms can be found in the previous lesson)

Why build?

Building solids from views will help with our ability to visualise solids and find their volume and surface area.

 

Building solids by drawing nets

 

Task 1

For each of the solids below:

  1. Measure the lengths of the sides of each view.
  2. Sketch a net to scale of the solid with the following views.
  3. Use the net to construct the solid out of paper.
