Number lines help us work out distance and direction, and can be horizontal or vertical (think of a thermometer). Remembering how to plot points on a number line, will help us in this lesson.
Plot the following numbers on the number lines:
Plot 3 on the number line below.
Plot 528 on the number line below.
Plot 700 on the number line below.
Number lines help us work out distance and direction, and can be horizontal or vertical.
Plot the point (0, 0) onto the coordinate plane.
The first number in a pair of coordinates tells us how many spaces to move across from the origin. The second number tells us how many spaces to move up or down from the origin.
Here is a number plane.
What object has coordinates (6,\,2)?
What are the coordinates of the rabbit?
Important terms to remember for a coordinate plane:
axes - the horizontal and vertical lines, the x-axis and y-axis
quadrants - the four different sections our axes create
coordinates - these tell us where points are located, with an x-value and a y-value
origin - where both x and y are equal to 0 and it's where both axes meet
