Lesson

## Read and write numbers to 99,999

Do you remember the names of the place value columns?

This video has some examples of numbers with tens of thousands, and helps us change them from written numbers to numerals. All the numbers in this lesson will have 5 digits.

### Examples

#### Example 1

Write the following using numerals:

fifty six thousand, three hundred and thirty seven

Worked Solution
Create a strategy

We can use a place value table to help us write the numeral.

Apply the idea

In numerals, it is 56\,337.

#### Example 2

Choose the written form for the number 90\,528.

A
Ninety thousand, five hundred and twenty eight
B
Ninety thousand, two hundred and fifty eight
C
Ninety five thousand and twenty eight
D
Ninety thousand and fifty two
Worked Solution
Create a strategy

Use a place value table and read the number out loud.

Apply the idea

In words, it is "Ninety thousand, five hundred and twenty eight".

Idea summary

Even though the written number may not mention a place value, we can't leave it out, so use a zero in any spot that has no digit.
