What time is shown on the clock?

A clock where the hour hand is passed 9 and the minute hand is pointing at 7.
Worked Solution
Create a strategy

For the hours, enter the number that the hour hand has just passed. For the minutes, multiply what the minute hand is pointing at by 5.

Apply the idea

The hour hand has just passed 9.

The minute hand is pointing at 7, so, 7\times5=35.

The time shown is 9\text{:}35.

Idea summary

The small hand on the clock points to the hour of the day and the long hand points to the minutes within that hour.

A clock where the hour hand is passed 11 and the minute hand is pointing at 3.

Create a strategy

Use the clock to see how much the minute hand needs to move.

Apply the idea

To get to midday or 12 noon, the minute hand needs to move from 3 to 12 on the clock. So it needs to move 9 numbers. If we multiply this by 5 we can find the number of minutes that has passed.
